Winged Beans: A Home Gardener's Must Try

Winged beans, that vine vegetable with blue to light violet flowers and four – cornered fruit  is a must try even in a tiny home garden.

With scientific name Psophocarpus tetragonolobus,  this plant   called Sigarilyas in Tagalog  and Garbanzos in Cebuano  has multiple uses.

For one, aside from providing food, this vegetable can  also serve as an ornamental plant.  It can be made to climb over a gate or fence like a bower, its tiny but profuse flowers serving as a welcoming treat to the eyes.
As it can climb over fences, pergola or woody plants, the winged bean can be planted even in limited spaces.

A hardy plant, Garbanzos, once established,  can tolerate minimal water, and withstands  insect pests to some degree.  Its leaves are good humus material, and the plant itself is nitrogen fixing, making it a good crop of choice in poor soils.

Garbanzos is not only a tasty, versatile ingredient in a number of dishes, like the traditional sinigang and utan law-oy (vegetable stew).  It is also packed with nutrients, such as Vitamins A, B and C, protein, and folate.

Want to plant Garbanzos?  I can share a few seeds, first-come-first served basis.  Text me at 0927-8575-110.
